Graphic Programs
There are two types of computer graphics: raster graphics, where each pixel is separately defined (as in a digital photograph), and vector graphics, where mathematical formulas are used to draw lines and shapes, which are then interpreted at the viewer's end to produce the graphic.

Dia
[
Download Page ] [ Home Page ]
Dia is a GTK+ based diagram creation program for Linux, Unix and Windows released under the GPL license.
Dia is roughly inspired by the commercial Windows program 'Visio', though more geared towards informal diagrams for casual use. It can be used to draw many different kinds of diagrams.
It currently has special objects to help draw entity relationship diagrams, UML diagrams, flowcharts, network diagrams, and many other diagrams. It is also possible to add support for new shapes by writing simple XML files, using a subset of SVG to draw the shape.
It can load and save diagrams to a custom XML format (gzipped by default, to save space), can export diagrams to a number of formats, including EPS, SVG, XFIG, WMF and PNG, and can print diagrams (including ones that span multiple pages).
We feel Dia is in a state where it can be actively used. Many features are implemented and the code is quite solid and mature. Try downloading Dia and tell us what you think of it. If you find any bugs, please report them with Gnome Bugzilla. Check out the code too, you might even want to contribute..

Page ] [ Home Page ]
GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.
GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.
GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X.

jPatch
[
Download Page ] [ Home Page ]

JPatch is a spline based 3D modeling tool (a patch modeler). It can be used to create 3D models for POV-Ray or RenderMan® compatible renderers (e.g. Aqsis).
It is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License.
JPatch is work in progress. The current version (JPatch 0.4) supports modeling and some very basic animation features. There are develpment versions available (0.5.x) that support bones and a more sophisticated animator module, but this development branch has been discontinued.
The new development branch is no longer patch based, it's now using Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces. The new animator module will support many new features like a scene graph and inverse kinematics. A first version of this new code should be ready real soon now - but please keep in mind that I'm writing JPatch in my spare-time, so I can't promise anything.
Supported platforms
JPatch is written in Java, so it should run on every platform with a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.4 or later installed. Newer versions (0.5 and later) require Java 1.5 (5.0). I've tested it on Microsoft Windows and Linux, and as far as I know it runs on Mac OS X too.
